What to Consider Before Buying

Brushless is worth paying for, mostly

A brushless motor gives roughly 30–50% more runtime per charge and runs cooler under sustained load. If you use a drill more than a few times a month, it pays for itself. For genuinely occasional use, a good brushed drill is not the compromise it is made out to be.

You are buying a battery platform, not a drill

The drill will last five to eight years. The platform decision will govern every cordless tool you buy in that time. Before choosing, look at what else is on the system and whether the packs are backward compatible with older tools.

Torque figures are close to meaningless

Manufacturers measure peak torque under conditions you will never encounter. What matters is torque under sustained load before the thermal cutout trips, which almost nobody publishes. Our test numbers are measured, not quoted.

Weight decides whether you enjoy using it

The difference between a 1.5 kg and a 1.9 kg drill is invisible in a shop and obvious on a ladder. If the work is overhead or repetitive, weigh the tool with the battery you will actually run.
