Apple launched three phones on 9 September and gave them names that are easy to confuse. One of them cannot use a normal case at all, one of them does not exist yet, and a great many listings currently say “iPhone 18” without telling you which is meant. Here is what fits what.

Start with the name, because the name is the trap
The foldable is not called the iPhone 18 Fold. That was the rumour name, it circulated for two years, and a lot of people are still typing it. Apple calls it the iPhone Duo. It is a passport-style fold with a 7.6-inch inner display and a 5.4-inch outer one, it starts at $1,999, and it is eSIM-only in every market with no SIM tray at all.
Two dates matter more than the price. Pre-orders open on 16 October and it goes on sale on 23 October. Nobody has one yet.
Alongside it Apple launched the iPhone 18 Pro and the iPhone 18 Pro Max, and those are on sale now. The plain iPhone 18, the cheap one most people actually buy, was not launched at all. Reporting on the event puts it in spring 2027.
Which produces a genuinely useful warning. A listing that says only “iPhone 18 case”, with no Pro and no Max, is describing a phone that will not be in anyone’s hand for roughly six months. Either the seller means the Pro or the Pro Max and has trimmed the title, or the listing is speculative. Read the compatibility line, not the headline.

The row that catches people is the Duo. A folding phone is two panels and a hinge; a Pro Max case is a single rigid tray built around a fixed slab. No amount of flex bridges that. If you have ordered a Duo, the only cases that will fit it on day one are the ones designed for it, and at launch that means Apple’s own.
If you bought the 18 Pro Max: the Diaclara
This is the case most likely to be worth your attention right now, because the Pro Max is the phone people are actually unboxing this week. Diaclara’s version is a dual-layer rugged case with a screen protector built into the front lip, sold in burgundy among nine other colours.

The built-in screen protector, honestly
This is the reason to buy this case and the reason some people return it, so it deserves more than a bullet point.
What you gain is real. There is no separate film to align, no bubbles to chase to the edge, and no gap between a protector and a case for grit to collect in. The front lip and the screen cover are one part, so the corners cannot lift.
What you give up is worth knowing before you order. The protector is PET film, not tempered glass, and that is a genuine difference rather than a marketing one: PET is a soft plastic and it will pick up fine scratches that a 9H glass protector would shrug off. Buyer reviews on the listing repeatedly mention the surface holding fingerprints, one putting it plainly — the screen protector “gets pretty smudgy”.
And the part almost nobody mentions until it happens: when the protector scratches, you cannot replace it. It is bonded to the case. Replacing a scratched stick-on film is a small, cheap job. Here it means buying the case again, which is a different proposition entirely.
Unpicking the drop-test claim
The listing puts three things in one sentence: MIL-STD-810H-2019, an SGS certificate number, and “passed military-grade 8,000 times drop tested”. They are not the same claim and the sentence invites you to read them as one.
MIL-STD-810H is a real US Department of Defense environmental test standard, and its transit drop procedure specifies 26 drops, not eight thousand. A figure in the thousands is characteristic of a tumble-drum test, where a device is rotated inside a barrel and falls repeatedly from a low height. Tumble testing is a legitimate durability check. It is a different test from the military standard, at a fraction of the drop height, and stacking the two figures into one line overstates both.
The certificate number is worth a second look too. GZMR220802655102-1 carries 2208 in the position where these references usually carry the year and month, which would place it in August 2022 — four years before this phone was announced. Certificates commonly cover a case design or a material family rather than one handset, so this is not evidence of anything improper. It does mean the number is unlikely to describe testing of this specific case on this specific phone, and if that distinction matters to you, it is a fair question to put to the seller before ordering.
None of which makes it a bad case. Raised corners, a 1.5 mm lip and a dual-layer build are the things that actually stop a screen meeting a kerb, and this has all three.
Magnets and charging
There is a magnet ring moulded in, so MagSafe mounts and wallets latch without a separate adapter and the case stays on for wireless charging. The thing to watch on any thick rugged case is not whether wireless charging works but how fast it runs. Charge rate falls as the coil-to-coil gap grows, and a dual-layer case with a magnet ring is a thicker stack than a slim one. Diaclara does not publish a figure for this, and neither will we invent one.
Who should skip it
Anyone who wants glass over their screen. If a scratch-resistant surface matters more than a one-piece install, buy a slim case and a separate 9H tempered glass protector, and accept the alignment faff.
Anyone chasing minimum bulk. Dual layer plus a built-in protector plus a magnet ring is a lot of case. People who mostly want scratch protection and a MagSafe latch are better served by something thin.
And anyone with a Duo on pre-order, for the reason set out at the top: this will not fit, and no rugged case for a slab phone will.

Will an iPhone 18 Pro Max case fit the iPhone Duo?

Why can I not find a plain iPhone 18?
Because it was not launched. Apple showed the 18 Pro, the 18 Pro Max and the Duo; reporting on the event places the standard iPhone 18 in spring 2027. Any case listed today for a plain iPhone 18 is either mislabelled or speculative.
Does a Pro case fit a Pro Max?
No. They are different sizes and the camera cut-outs do not line up. Diaclara sells this case on separate listings for each, so check which one you are adding to the basket — the titles differ by one word.
Does wireless charging work through it?
Diaclara says yes, and the built-in magnet ring is there to align the charger. Expect the rate to be slower than with a bare phone or a slim case, because charge speed drops as the gap between coils increases. No published figure exists for how much, so treat the claim as compatibility rather than performance.
